This New Book Is Basically A Masterclass In Achieving Healthy Hair

The struggle for healthy hair is real. Whether you swear by a relaxer, protective styles, or your natural kinks and coils, we have all been on the search for the right mix of moisture, conditioning and styling to grow and maintain our tresses. Truth be told, some don’t even know if their hair is healthy.

That’s why Sarah Roberts, a UK-based hair consultant and an associate member of the Association of Registered Trichologists, wrote You and Your Hair: The Ultimate Healthy Hair Masterclass for Afro Textured Hair. The book is broken down into eight chapters designed to walk readers through science-based and holistic approaches to help break the cycle of hair damage.

The book, Sarah tells Hype Hair, was inspired by her natural hair journey. When she first stopped relaxing her hair in 2006, she took to researching ways to revitalize her tresses. Apparently, she had been doing it all wrong, and her studies led her to create a new regimen in which she saw “amazing changes” in her and her daughter’s hair, including “the texture, newly discovered curl patterns, and length.”

That led to questions from friends, healthy hair parties, and, eventually, her own consulting company. But, she wanted to make the information even more accessible and easy to understand.

“It took me about five or six years to understand and make sense of all the information available, and I knew the frustration of not knowing where to start,” she says. “I wanted to provide this foundation, so people did not give up [on their healthy hair goals]. “I want everybody to see their true version of their beautiful hair.”

The book addresses such issues as scalp care and dry hair, which can lead to breakage. While certain products are key for moisturizing, Sarah advises that we focus on the process and not the products. “It is not a question of what I use, but more of what I do.” Like many hairstylists, she says, “a consistent regimen of washing, conditioning, and moisturizing” is the ultimate foundation.

She adds that the main key to healthy hair is having a healthy relationship with our hair. “This book will help you get to know and understand your unique hair needs so you can take care of it.”
