Selena Gomez’s New Blonde Hair Color Took Eight Hours to Achieve
Selena Gomez, is that you? The singer, actor, and Rare Beauty founder revealed a brand-new hair color via Instagram on April 23, and she looks so, so different (in the best way).
“New look. Need to pick new Rare Beauty lip and blush shades now 💓,” reads the caption of the mirror-selfie posted to her beauty brand’s Instagram page. In the photo, we see that the star now has an icy, nearly-platinum blonde tone with a healthy helping of dark roots to keep it looking a little edgy and make growing it in more seamless. And doesn’t the creamy color look so cute with her multicolor pastel manicure?
The colorist behind this major hair transformation, Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One Salon in Los Angeles, have been doing Selena’s color for over a decade. “She typically keeps it pretty natural, but this time she went for a big change,” they explain. “This blonde is unique to her as we had to make sure there was an equal balance of cool and warm for her skin tone.
After prepping her hair with In Common Crystal Serum, they highlighted her head with Joico’s Blonde Life lightening powder and 30 volume developer, letting it process “for quite some time.” After reaching a pale yellow tone, they took the lightener off and did an all-over pre-tone with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 8NW and 10NW (equal parts) with 5 volume, and a second toner with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 10V with 5 volume. “We finished the process with a full Crystal Cashmere treatment by In Common to lock everything in and bring her hair back to life,” they say.
All in all, it took 200 foils, multiple bowls of bleach, and a whopping eight hours to transform Gomez’s brunette hair into a brilliant, healthy-looking blonde hue. (And yes, they sent her home with purple shampoo: Joico’s Color Balance Purple Shampoo to be exact.)
