Review: Why Hourglass Velvet Story Lip Cream Sold Out Immediately

I have beef with matte liquid lipsticks. Sure, they can last for hours through all sorts of eating, drinking, etcetera… But at their worst, they can be dry, flaky, and downright uncomfortable. It’s the primary reason I’ve been wearing satins, stains, and balms more often than not for the past few years. That said, it’s incredibly rare I stumble upon a liquid matte I want to wear more than once. But when I swiped on Hourglass Cosmetics’ Velvet Story Lip Cream for the first time, I knew I’d found a new long-term companion.

Despite having a $36 price tag, which I consider quite high for a single lipstick, this six-shade range of nude and pink lipsticks sold out immediately after their April debut (they were gone before the end of the launch day). It’s pretty easy to see why: It’s so. Fucking. Comfortable.

This lipstick, or lip cream, as the brand calls it, takes everything you know about matte lipsticks and turns it on its head. It’s very matte, yes, but in a way that looks soft and blurred rather than bold and intense — like your natural, bare lip but just a little more colorful. So the word “velvet” in its name is extremely fitting.
