Nicole Richie Set Her Hair on Fire By Blowing Out 40th Birthday Candles — Watch Video

Nicole Richie welcomed her 40th year by lighting her hair on fire — though not intentionally. The reality star and creative director of lifestyle brand, House of Harlow 1960, posted a video of the incident to her Instagram grid on Tuesday, September 21.

Richie appropriately captioned the video, “Well… so far 40 is 🔥.” She cranes her neck over the cake to blow out all the candles, until suddenly, her hair catches hold of the candles closest to her. Once she realizes her hair’s ends are on fire, she screams and jolts back in her chair. Richie attempted to let out the flames with her hands, in addition to a helping hand sitting to her right.

We’re not sure what Richie did immediately after this happened since the footage stopped a few seconds after she realized her hair was on fire. However, her plans for today probably involve a visit to her salon, which hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons says is a crucial step in preventing any further damage to burnt hair.

“If your hair strand that came into contact with the flame isn’t completely burned away, it’s going to be singed — this really isn’t damage you can fix yourself. You will need to get in the salon chair as soon as possible so your stylist can figure out how to trim around the damage,” he tells Allure. Otherwise, he says not getting a haircut may inflict “more damage to the healthy hair around it.”

On the other hand, when you’re in the thick of the situation, Fitzsimons says to relax and face reality, even though your instinct may not be telling you to do so. “It’s hair, it grows back. Be thankful that the situation wasn’t worse,” he explains.

Once the burnt hair has been cut off, the repairing process doesn’t end there. “Use your favorite conditioner every time you wash to keep your hair well-moisturized,” he says. Furthermore, he recommends adding  “a reparative hair treatment,” such as a hair mask, to the mix in order “to nourish and strengthen your strands.”

Fitzsimons says taking a hair supplement may help some of the hair grow back as well, but he advises to always consult a doctor first before taking one.

Even though Richie’s 40th birthday came with an unwanted guest — burnt hair — it’ll definitely be one for the books.
