It’s a well-established pop-culture fact: Germany loves David Hasselhoff. The love affair arguably started when he serenaded revelers over the crumbling Berlin all on New Year’s Eve 1989, three years before his daughter Hayley was born. And Germans clearly have enough Hasselhoff love left in them for her, too, because she is now gracing the cover of Playboy Germany — making her the first curve model to cover a European edition of the magazine.
On Wednesday, April 14, both the publication and Hayley Hasselhoff herself shared the hopefully trailblazing news along with her stunning cover. Hasselhoff’s voluminous blonde curls frame her face, which leans against a mirror; she’s wearing only a satiny red robe, which matches her lipstick and manicure. And looking at it, you can’t help but wonder what took so long to cast a curvier person.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured to be the first ever curve model on a European cover of PLAYBOY,” Hasselhoff wrote in an extensive Instagram caption, thanking photographer Ellen von Unwerth for her work. “I am overcome with emotion around what this cover signifies for inclusivity and its greater purpose towards female empowerment. I wanted to use this platform to express that you have the power to love your body without hesitation because of societies’ standards of beauty.”
Hasselhoff goes on to say she feels “empowered to be able to wake up and know that I get to live unapologetically myself,” and she hopes to inspire women to face their fears and not let their bodies does not define them.
“If there is one thing I would tell my younger self it would be that you are worthy just as you are. Now, more than ever, we should be grounded in the exploration of self and feel encouraged to celebrate ourselves in ways that feel most authentic,” she writes. “I can only hope this cover will allow women to know that they are loved, valued and desired just as they are – right here, right now.”
Although Hasselhoff is the first curve model to cover a European edition of Playboy, it was Fluvia Lacerda who became the first plus-size model to grab the cover spot of any Playboy magazine in 2016, for Playboy Brazil. In 2017, Molly Constable was the first plus model to be prominently featured in American Playboy.
