Gwen Stefani Recreated ‘Just a Girl’ Look From 1995 No Doubt Video

If you weren’t around — or weren’t yet sentient enough to know what was up — in 1995, let this then-16-year-old tell you: Gwen Stefani was a revelation. For so many of us, No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” was not only a palatably angsty first toe-dip into something resembling feminism, but it was also a source of beauty and style inspiration because of the stunning lead singer. It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Stefani debuted what became one of her most memorable looks (harder for some of us than others, am I right, fellow ’90s teens?), but it’s not nearly as hard to believe that she can still rock that look like it was just yesterday.

Stefani kicked off the new week with a photo posted to her Instagram grid that would make anyone do a double-take. In the picture — posted to promote her new single, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” — she’s wearing a cropped, white, bedazzled tank with red and blue trim that looks exactly like the one she wore in the “Just a Girl” video. But that’s not where the resemblance ends.

Stefani also recreated the key beauty elements of the look. Just like in the 1995 clip, she’s wearing her signature red lipstick, red nail polish, and of course, a blonde pompadour ponytail.

Stefani made a few tweaks to the original look. Instead of a jeweled bindi, which has prompted cultural-appropriation criticism in the past, she placed gems underneath both eyes; she seems to have skipped the red barrettes she wore in the video; her brows are no longer super skinny; and she’s added lots of gold jewelry, including bangles, a cross pendant, and necklaces reading “Stefani” and “Shelton” (a nod to her fiancé and fellow The Voice judge, Blake Shelton).

Fans in the comments were all too happy to see Gwen revive her mid-’90s style. “What is going on?????? I’m reliving my adolescence right now!!!!!!!!!” one commenter wrote, while another said, “Yes please! So iconic! ⭐😍⭐😍.”

Reminisce with me by watching the “Just a Girl” video, won’t you?
