A queen by the name of Tyler Clark has got us loving our crowns even more as she celebrates Black beauty through her artwork. After years of painting, the self-proclaimed #ArtBae has recently gone viral for her innovative 3D paintings that feature textured hair.
From Bantu knots to locs and twists to those famous Nipsey Hussle braids, Tyler’s art highlights the beauty of Black people’s many shades, professions, and natural tresses. She even sheds light on current social matters such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the honors those we lost, like the late Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gigi.
Incorporating hair into artwork seems to be a trend, as fashion designer Kimberly Goldson had a similar execution on her apparel, as seen in her New York Fashion Week’s SS21 show.

HYPE HAIR: How long have you been an artist?
TYLER: I have been painting more intentionally for the past five years.
HH: What inspired you to incorporate real hair into your art?
TYLER: I wanted my art to be different. When I started adding hair to my art, it was something I’ve never seen before. It was my way of blending my love for hair with painting.
HH: What kind of hair do you use in your artwork?
TYLER: I use synthetic hair; the type varies from braids to twists to locs.
HH: What is the creative process like for you?
TYLER: My creative process starts with me. Art is my first therapy. I listen to musicians and paint. It is my way of expression.
