A 93-Year-old Veteran Whittling Walking Sticks Has Raised $16,000 For Food Pantry

When the going gets tough, the tough keep going, or at least that’s what you do when you’re a 93-year-old retired Air Force colonel, and John Hobson likes to be busy.

“If they put him somewhere and told him to sit down, he would go crazy,” said his son Mark Hobson. saying WKEF-TV.

In 2020, Hobson set about making nearly 100 walking sticks, the proceeds of which he donated to a local Ohio charity, the Xenia Area Fish Food Pantry.

“He’s a sweet man who doesn’t give a damn about other people who don’t have [anything]”Said Mark Hobson.

To sell his wares, Hobson set up a roadside stand in his front yard. The price was beyond reasonable: $ 3.00 each, or a donation from a food pantry.

It’s no wonder that tickets for the senior whittling-wonder were sold out in just a few days, having won around $ 600.

Wanting to do more, Hobson and his family created a GoFundMe page that has since raised $ 9,565 in cash for the Xenia area fish food pantry. In total, donations from the sale of the walking sticks, the GoFundMe campaignand additional donations made in Hobson’s name total about $ 16,000.

“Thank you for doing something very nice to make Grandpa happy and make a difference for so many in our community,” wrote Hobson’s granddaughter Jenny Denen. “We have been very touched by your kindness and generosity.”

“The pantry has told us that a donation of $ 1 generates five pounds of food. That means that we have helped the pantry distribute around 40 tons of food to the Xenia community! What a great blessing to those in need during this difficult time.

Staying busy is certainly a factor that keeps Hobson working hard, but his main motivation is probably simpler. He says knowing that he can still help those in need in a meaningful way only makes him feel good.
