More beaver reintroductions announced for the UK

Beavers will be reintroduced to five more counties in England and Wales in 2021, after successful reintroductions elsewhere.

The Wildlife Trusts will release 20 of the animals that gnaw on trees and river reservoirs in Derbyshire, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire and Montgomeryshire, and had already released them in Dorset this week. Beavers were hunted to extinction in the UK 400 years ago, but have since been the subject of various recovery programs.

“Beavers are a fantastic keystone species that have a very important role to play in restoring nature in Britain,” said Craig Bennett, CEO of The Wildlife Trusts. “Beavers help stop flooding downstream, filter impurities and create new homes for otters, water voles and kingfishers.”
