I Tested La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Balm Intense Repair Moisturizing Cream on Dry, Flaky Skin

We talk a lot about good “basic” moisturizers at Allure — dermatologists love them for making skin glow without extras (like fragrances) that can cause sensitivity or dryness. La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Balm Intense Repair Moisturizing Cream fits the bill, and then some.

The fragrance-free formula is perfect in its simplicity. It’s gentle enough that it can be used on sensitive and eczema-prone skin (it’s even earned the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance). And because it’s loaded with some tried-and-true moisturizers — shea butter, glycerin — it’s also effective enough that it got rid of a stubborn dry flaky patch on my hand (the result of my engagement ring rubbing against my pinky 24/7). It’s designed for use on the face and on the body, and it helps calm redness (the formula has niacinamide, which helps take down flushing). And even though it’s got two seemingly contradictory words in its name — “balm” and “cream” — this moisturizer feels (and looks) just like a rich cream going on.

But that’s not to suggest that it’s just therapeutic: La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+ Balm Intense Repair Moisturizing Cream also gives my cheeks a pretty, natural-looking dewiness that I love. Because the formula is so rich and so creamy, there are a few ways that I like to use it: 1) I’ll tap a little over my cheeks for a glow, after smoothing a lighter moisturizer or serum over my whole face. 2) I’ll use it as an overnight treatment on days when my face is looking or feeling dry to balance it back out. 3) I use it regularly as a body moisturizer, and it makes my legs, hands, and arms soft and smooth. Plus, it is unassuming after it is rubbed in. There’s no slippery feel, and no fragrance to compete with my favorite perfume.
