111Skin Vitamin C Brightening Booster Treats Dark Spots Over Time | Review

A weird question beauty journalists sometimes ask celebrities, makeup artists, hairstylists, and the like is, “If you could only bring three beauty products to bring to a deserted island, what would they be?” (It’s supposed to be a cheeky way of asking, “So what are your three absolute must-haves?”)

It’s a silly question for a lot of reasons (assuming you’re being whisked away to this deserted island unwittingly, it’s not likely you’d be given time to pack — nor would nail polish be your first priority) but nevertheless, I have often considered my own answers. In no particular order, I would bring: an all-purpose balm, sunscreen, and… a vitamin C serum.

You probably understand my logic in choosing a do-it-all balm and SPF. But I understand how vitamin C might seem like a wild card. However, if I was asked to narrow down my routine, a vitamin C serum would absolutely make the cut: Not only does it help treat the signs of existing damage (like fine lines and dark spots), but because it’s an antioxidant, it also proactively protects skin from environmental stressors.

The ingredient is such a powerhouse that in the past, I’ve overlooked the fact that most vitamin C serums are sticky, smelly, and tinted, leaving a veil of orange across my fair skin. But did you notice I said that was the past

That’s because 111Skin Vitamin C Brightening Booster is none of those things. If you handed me an unmarked bottle of it, I’d never guess it’s loaded with vitamin C. The crystal-clear formula has no discernible smell, and absorbs quickly and easily (which is extra-important for a product that should always be topped off with sunscreen).

Because I love it so much — and because I’m eager to treat some of the hyperpigmentation I collected over the summer — I’ve been using it straight out of the dropper. But you can also mix a few drops into your moisturizer to act more like insurance.

All that said, I am officially updating my “deserted island” picks as follows: an all-purpose balm, sunscreen, and — very specifically — 111Skin Vitamin C Brightening Booster.
